Traditional telephone service uses copper wires to transmit communications signals. US Sonet Fiber Optic Service, on the other hand, transmits signals using strands of hair thin glass fibers and laser-generated pulses of light.

When that light reaches your location through the US Sonet Fiber Optic Network, it is converted to electrical signals in a box installed outside your home call the "Fiber Optic Gateway".

These electrical signals can be "read" by your telephone, television, and computer. Information that is sent from your location will be converted from electrical signals to light pulses in the Fiber Optic Gateway.

Unlike traditional self-powered telephone & cable television service, your US Sonet Fiber Optic Service depends on your home's power source. The Fiber Optic Gateway has a power cord that goes into home or office & connects to a Battery Back-up Unit where it plugs into an existing standard AC outlet.

To ensure connectivity to the US Sonet Fiber Optic Network, please make sure your Battery Back-up Unit is plugged in at all times.

Battery Back-up Unit (BBU):

Continuous Power When You Need it

In the event of a commercial power failure- your battery back-up unit will provide you with power for voice service for up to 8 hours of talk time. Video and data service do not function in the event of a commercial power failure.

Your BBU has light indicators to signify conditions as described below:

 bbu.gif

Indicates BBU is on utility power (normal)

Indicates BBU is on battery power (problem)

Indicates DC power is provided to Gateway (normal)

Indicates DC power is NOT provided to Gateway (problem)

Indicates battery is functioning properly (normal)

Indicates problem with battery or connection (problem)

Voice Service Test

If you follow the trouble shooting tips and still do not have voice service you may test to see it the problem lies inside your wiring. Take a corded telephone and a slotted screwdriver to your gateway. Open the gateway (using the slotted srewdriver) and unplug the line from the jack corresponding to the line in question. Plug your telephone into that phone jack and listen for a dial-tone. (If you have only one phone line, plug your phone into jack #1.)

If your receive a dial tone, the problem may be with your inside wiring. Please contact US Sonet for assistance.

However, other cable located between the Gateway and any equipment is customer-owned and is not maintained by US Sonet. For example, the cable that supplies your internet connection, if you have this service, may have been installed by US Sonet, but is now customer-owned.
